Etiology

← Back to Glossary

Definition

Etiology refers to the cause or set of causes underlying a disease or condition.

Correct Scientific Usage

Researchers investigate etiology through epidemiological studies, laboratory experiments, and clinical observations. Scientists distinguish between proximate causes (immediate trigger) and ultimate causes (underlying factors), and recognize that most diseases have multifactorial etiologies involving complex interactions.

Common Misunderstandings

Complex diseases are frequently described as having a single cause, when in reality they arise from multiple contributing factors and pathways.

People may also confuse correlation with causation when discussing disease etiology, or assume that identifying a risk factor is the same as identifying etiology.

Why It Matters

Understanding etiology informs prevention, treatment, and policy. Oversimplifying causes can lead to misguided interventions and overstated claims.
